RICE concentrates its overall scientific potential in one research programme titled “Smart Industrial Systems”, which is further subdivided into four separate research activities, exhibiting very close mutual links: 

New drive concepts

Research on new drive concepts and advanced technologies for a new generation of transport systems with special regard to traction vehicles. The main research targets include new drive technologies, more efficient drive systems, drives with a minimum environmental impact and advanced systems for higher transport safety.

Material research

Research on organic, printed and flexible electronics, smart textiles, smart garments and environmental sensors for IoT applications. The core objectives cover printing and additive deposition of electronic structures using novel functional nanomaterials (metallic nanoparticles, organic conductive compounds, carbon nanotubes, graphene) and integration of electronic functionalities on flexible foils and in textiles. Particular attention is devoted to R&D on sensors for detection of humidity, temperature and various chemical gases and vapours based on electrochemical and chemoresistive principle.

Power generation and industrial systems

Research on new machines and technologies for more efficient energy conservation in the fields of power and heat generation, mining and heavy engineering industries.


System identification and diagnostics

Research on new diagnostic methods for technological systems and development of sophisticated testing methods for the same. Specific research and development tasks will be focused on testing the functionality and reliability of new equipment (HIL and SIL testing, process simulation and others). The project outputs are expected to improve the reliability and safety parameters of the new devices, equipment and processes developed within other project sectors.
